The Complete Guide

Moss Killer for Lawn

Moss killer is the quickest way to knock back a mossy lawn, but there's more to it than tipping some on and hoping. Choosing the right type, applying it at the right time of year, and - crucially - following up by removing the dead moss and fixing the underlying conditions is what separates a lasting result from moss that's back within months.

This guide explains how moss killers work, which type to use, exactly how and when to apply it, and how to stop the moss returning for good.

Common Causes

What's Causing the Problem?

Iron Sulphate (Ferrous Sulphate)

The most common and effective active ingredient. It blackens and kills moss within days and has the bonus of greening up the grass. Sold as a powder to dissolve, a soluble feed, or in weed-and-feed products.

Weed, Feed & Moss Killer Combined

A convenient 3-in-1 that kills moss, kills broadleaf weeds and feeds the lawn at once - ideal if your lawn has several problems, though best applied in the growing season.

Ready-to-Use Liquid Moss Killers

Easy for small lawns - you simply attach to a hose or spray on. Less economical for large areas than powdered iron sulphate.

Ferrous Sulphate as a Lawn Sand

Traditional lawn sand combines iron sulphate with sand and a nitrogen feed, killing moss while helping the surface and feeding the grass.

How to Fix It

How to Solve It - Step by Step

1

Choose the right product

For most lawns an iron-sulphate moss killer is the best value and most effective. Use a combined weed-feed-and-moss killer only in the growing season if you also have weeds and want to feed at the same time.

2

Apply at the right time of year

Early autumn (September-October) is the best window: warm soil, reliable rain and time for the lawn to recover before winter. Spring (March-April) is the next best, and lets you treat, scarify, overseed and feed in one go. Avoid frost, drought, very hot spells and the depths of winter, when the grass can't recover from the treatment.

3

Apply evenly and at the correct dose

Measure the area and apply at the rate on the pack. Uneven application leaves streaks and can scorch the grass if overdone. A watering can with a fine rose or a spreader gives even coverage.

4

Wait for the moss to blacken

The moss will turn black within 1-2 weeks, showing it's dead. Don't skip this - raking live moss just spreads the spores.

5

Scarify out the dead moss

Once blackened, rake or machine-scarify to physically remove all the dead moss and thatch. This is the step most people skip, and it's essential for the grass to recover.

6

Overseed and feed

Overseed the thin areas left behind and feed the lawn so healthy grass fills in and crowds out future moss.

7

Fix the underlying cause

Moss killer treats the symptom. To stop it returning, tackle the cause - improve drainage, aerate compacted soil, reduce shade, feed regularly and mow a little higher.

Quick Checklist
  • Choose an iron-sulphate (ferrous sulphate) moss killer
  • Apply in autumn or spring, avoiding frost, heat and drought
  • Apply evenly at the exact rate on the pack
  • Wait 1-2 weeks for the moss to blacken
  • Scarify out all the dead moss and thatch
  • Overseed, feed, and fix the cause so moss doesn't return
