What's Causing the Problem?
Heavy Clay Soil
Clay soil holds water and drains very slowly. It's extremely common across Basingstoke and Hampshire, and is the number-one reason lawns stay wet long after rain.
Soil Compaction
Compacted ground - from foot traffic, machinery, or new-build construction - closes up the pore spaces water needs to drain through, so it pools on the surface instead.

How to Solve It - Step by Step
Aerate the lawn
Hollow-tine or spike aeration is the first and most effective step. It punches channels through the compacted surface so water can drain down instead of pooling. For clay lawns, aerate at least once a year.
Top dress with sharp sand or a sandy loam
Brushing sharp sand into the aeration holes and across the surface gradually opens up the soil structure and improves drainage over time. This works well combined with regular aeration.
Scarify out thatch
Removing the spongy thatch layer lets water reach the soil and drain rather than sitting at grass level.
Break up the pan layer
For new-build lawns with a compacted subsoil pan, deep aeration or, in bad cases, lifting the turf and breaking up the layer beneath is needed to give water a route away.
Re-grade dips and hollows
Fill and level low spots so water runs off rather than collecting. Ensure the ground slopes gently away from the house.
Install a drainage system
For persistently waterlogged lawns, a French drain or land-drain system installed below the surface carries water away to a soakaway or drain. This is the permanent solution where soil improvement isn't enough.
Choose the right grass and improve the soil
When re-turfing or overseeding a wet lawn, improving the soil with organic matter and sand and choosing hard-wearing seed makes the lawn far more resilient to wet conditions.
- Aerate the lawn to open drainage channels through compacted soil

- Fill and level any dips where water collects
