Lawn Full of Moss
A lawn full of moss is a sign, not just a problem. Moss doesn't push grass out - it moves in wherever the grass is already weak. So while moss killer and raking will clear it temporarily, the moss will simply return within a season unless you fix the conditions that allowed it in the first place.

What's Causing the Problem?
Shade
Grass needs sunlight. In shaded areas under trees, next to fences or on north-facing gardens, the grass thins and moss quickly fills the gap.
Poor Drainage & Waterlogging
Moss loves constantly damp conditions. Heavy clay soil (common in Basingstoke) and compacted ground that holds water is perfect for moss and hostile to grass.
Compacted Soil
Compaction stops water and air reaching the roots. The grass weakens, thins, and moss takes over the surface.
Mowing Too Short
Scalping the lawn weakens the grass and exposes soil, giving moss the light and space it needs to establish.
Acidic or Poor Soil
Low soil fertility and acidic conditions favour moss over grass. Underfed lawns are far more prone to a moss takeover.
Thatch Build-Up
A thick layer of dead organic matter (thatch) at the base of the grass holds moisture and provides the perfect bed for moss to grow.
How to Solve It - Step by Step
Kill the moss first
Apply a lawn moss killer (usually iron sulphate based) in spring or autumn. The moss will blacken within 1-2 weeks, ready for removal. See our dedicated moss killer guide for product and timing advice.
Scarify to remove dead moss and thatch
Once the moss has blackened, rake it out by hand or use a powered scarifier. This is physical work but essential - leaving dead moss in place just smothers new grass.
Aerate compacted soil
Spike or hollow-tine the lawn to relieve compaction and improve drainage, so water drains away instead of sitting on the surface feeding the moss.
Improve drainage in wet areas
For persistently waterlogged lawns, adding sharp sand as a top dressing, or installing proper drainage, tackles the root cause of moss.
Reduce shade where possible
Prune overhanging branches and thin out dense hedges to let more light onto the lawn. In deep, permanent shade, shade-tolerant grass seed gives grass a fighting chance.
Feed and overseed
Feed the lawn with a spring/autumn fertiliser to strengthen the grass, then overseed bare areas so dense, healthy grass crowds moss out.
Adjust your mowing
Raise the mower height and never cut more than a third of the blade. Longer grass shades the soil surface and keeps moss from getting the light it needs.
