My Lawn Won't Grow
Few things are more frustrating than sowing grass seed and watching nothing happen - or nursing a lawn that stubbornly refuses to thicken up. Grass has a few basic needs: decent soil, enough light, water, warmth and the right seed. When it won't grow, one of those is missing.
This guide walks through every common reason grass fails to grow, how to tell which applies to you, and the steps to finally get a thick, healthy lawn established.
What's Causing the Problem?
Poor or Compacted Soil
Grass needs loose, fertile soil to root into. Compacted ground, heavy clay, or the poor subsoil left on new builds gives roots nothing to grow into, so seed struggles and existing grass stays thin.
Sowing at the Wrong Time
Grass seed needs warm, moist soil to germinate. Sowing in cold winter soil or the height of a dry summer usually fails - spring and early autumn are the reliable windows.
Too Much Shade
Standard grass won't grow in deep shade under trees or beside fences and buildings. Without enough light, it simply won't establish.
Wrong or Old Seed
Poor-quality or out-of-date seed germinates badly. The wrong seed for the conditions (e.g. a fine ornamental mix in a shady, high-wear garden) will also disappoint.
Not Enough Water
Newly sown seed must stay consistently moist. Let it dry out even once during germination and much of it will fail.
Seed Eaten or Washed Away
Birds eat uncovered seed, and heavy rain or watering too hard washes it into clumps or off the area entirely.
Underfeeding
Even established grass won't thicken without nutrients. An underfed lawn grows slowly and stays sparse.
How to Solve It - Step by Step
Test and improve the soil
Loosen compacted ground by forking or aerating, and work in fresh topsoil or compost. On new builds especially, improving the poor subsoil is usually the difference between success and failure.
Sow at the right time
Aim for spring (April-May) or early autumn (September-October), when soil is warm and moist. Avoid frosty periods and peak summer drought.
Choose the right seed
Use fresh, good-quality seed suited to your garden - hard-wearing for family lawns, and a shade-tolerant mix for areas that don't get much sun.
Prepare a proper seed bed
Rake the soil to a fine, level tilth, remove stones and debris, firm it gently, then sow evenly at the recommended rate and lightly rake the seed in.
Keep it consistently moist
Water gently and often enough that the surface never dries out during germination - usually daily in dry weather until the grass is established.
Protect the seed
Cover with a thin layer of soil or use netting to deter birds, and water gently so seed isn't washed away.
Feed to thicken an established lawn
For a thin but living lawn, aerate, scarify out thatch and moss, overseed, and feed with a seasonal fertiliser to encourage dense, healthy growth.
