Hedge Cutting in Basingstoke, Done Properly
A hedge is the one thing in a garden that makes the whole plot look either cared for or neglected, and it only takes one missed season for it to tip the wrong way. Landscaping Basingstoke cut hedges across the town and the surrounding villages, from waist-high box and privet to conifer boundaries well over head height.
Most of what we are called out to is one of two jobs. Either a hedge that is trimmed regularly and just needs its annual cut to a clean line, or a hedge nobody has touched in three or four years that has taken a metre off the width of the garden and needs bringing back. Both are straightforward. What matters is knowing how hard each species can be cut, because with conifers there is no second chance.
Hedge work sits alongside the rest of our gardening in Basingstoke and our soft landscaping service, so it can be a one-off visit or part of regular upkeep. If a hedge has gone past saving, or you want it out and replaced, that usually becomes a garden clearance job instead.
One thing on height
There is only a certain height we can safely reach. With taller hedges we need to come out and look at it first to work out whether we are able to cut it, and we will tell you honestly if it is beyond what we can do safely.
Hedges We Cut
Every species has its own rules about how hard it can be cut and when. Here is how we treat the hedges we see most across Basingstoke.
Leylandii & conifer hedges
Fast growers that need two cuts a year to stay tidy. Height comes off easily, but the sides can only go back to green growth - brown wood never regrows.
Beech & hornbeam
Forgiving formal hedges. They take a hard reduction in winter and come back thicker, so a neglected one can usually be brought right back to shape.
Privet & box
Fast, dense and best cut two or three times through the season to keep crisp edges on formal shapes and low borders.
Laurel & photinia
Broad-leaved screening hedges. Cut cleanly rather than shredded, so the cut leaves do not brown off across the face of the hedge.
Mixed native & rural hedgerows
Hawthorn, blackthorn and field maple boundaries on village plots, cut back in winter once the berries have gone and nesting is over.
Topiary & shaped hedges
Arches, curves, cloud pruning and stepped tops kept true, cut by eye against a line rather than freehand.

When to Cut a Hedge
Timing decides how long the cut lasts and, with conifers, whether the hedge recovers at all. This is roughly how our hedge cutting year runs in Basingstoke.
Spring (March - May)
First cut of the year on formal hedges once growth starts. Nesting season is under way, so every hedge is checked for active nests before the trimmers come out.
Summer (June - August)
Peak growth. Fast hedges like privet and leylandii get their maintenance cut, and late summer is the single best time for a tidy that will hold its shape into autumn.
Autumn (September - November)
The main annual cut for most Basingstoke gardens. Growth has slowed, nesting is over and the hedge goes into winter looking sharp.
Winter (December - February)
The window for hard work. Height and width reductions on beech, hornbeam, laurel and conifers, plus removals, while the hedge is dormant.
Hedge Cutting Before & After
Basingstoke gardens where the boundary hedges had been left a few seasons and were taking width off the lawn and closing in the paths.

AfterWhy Choose Us for Hedge Cutting in Basingstoke?
Cut to a proper line
Strings and levels on long runs, so the top is flat and the faces are square rather than wandering.
Right cut for the species
Conifers are trimmed inside the green. Beech, hornbeam and privet can be taken back harder without dying off.
Nesting birds checked first
It is an offence to disturb an active nest. We check before the trimmers start, and come back if we find one.
All clippings taken away
Sheeted before we start and cleared after, including the drive and path. Licensed waste carrier CBDU637378.
Honest about height limits
There is a limit to how high we can safely reach, so very tall hedges need a look first before we can say yes.

Hedge, Fence or Both?
Plenty of Basingstoke boundaries are a fence with a hedge grown up in front of it, and once the hedge is thick enough the fence behind it quietly rots out of sight. If we are cutting a hedge back hard and find the panels have gone, we will tell you - it is far cheaper to sort the fencing while the hedge is open than to cut it twice.
Taking a hedge out altogether frees up a surprising amount of ground, which is often better spent on new turf or a patio. Costs for all of it are set out on our Basingstoke price guide.
