We get called in for all sorts of reasons: new patios, fresh turf, driveways. But one of the most satisfying jobs is a simple garden clearance that makes a real difference to someone's life. This is one of those cases.
A gentleman in Basingstoke got in touch because he was looking to sell his property. The house was ready, but the garden wasn't. It had been left untouched for a long time and had become completely overgrown. Weeds had taken over the borders, ivy was smothering the fence line, and years of leaf fall and debris had built up across the whole plot. It was, in his words, "an embarrassment."
Estate agents had already told him that the state of the garden would affect the sale. First impressions matter, and a neglected garden is one of the first things buyers notice.
The Garden Before We Started

Before

Before
The borders were choked with ivy and bramble runners, and years of fallen leaves had formed a thick layer over everything. The whole garden looked tired, dark, and completely neglected.
What the Client Needed
The brief was clear: make the garden look presentable enough to help sell the house. It didn't need to be perfect, just tidy, clean, and cared-for. No elaborate landscaping required. Just a fresh start that would photograph well and give buyers a positive impression.
- Full garden clearance: all weeds, overgrowth, and debris removed
- Ivy and bramble stripped from borders and fence lines
- Beds cleared back to clean, workable ground
- Fresh bark mulch laid throughout borders for a neat, finished look
- Rubbish and green waste removed from site
What We Did
We arrived early and worked through the whole garden in a single day. The first step was stripping back all the overgrown vegetation: pulling out ivy runners, cutting back brambles, removing dead wood and unwanted shrubs. The borders had completely lost their shape under years of growth, so we re-defined the edges as we cleared.
Once the ground was cleared, we raked through thoroughly to remove every last bit of debris, dead root material, and leaf matter. This took time, but it's what separates a proper clearance from a quick tidy. Leaving the ground clean means the mulch sits properly and the beds look right.

Clearing roots and debris by hand. No shortcuts taken.

Pulling out weed roots by hand - there were a huge amount buried beneath the stone, all had to come out
We then laid a generous layer of bark chip mulch across all the cleared borders. Bark mulch does several things at once: it suppresses future weed growth (making the next owner's life easier), it retains moisture in the soil, and, most importantly for this client, it gives the garden an immediately clean, purposeful appearance. It transforms the look of a garden quickly and cheaply. All green waste and rubbish was loaded and taken away by us.
The Garden After: Ready to Sell

After

After
Clean, defined borders, fresh bark mulch, and no trace of the overgrowth that was there before. The garden now looks intentional, and that's exactly what buyers need to see.
The Result
The difference was night and day. The client was genuinely thrilled. He'd lived with the garden in that state for so long that he'd stopped seeing it. Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes and a team who'll get stuck in.
The property went on the market shortly after. A clean, tidy garden doesn't just improve kerb appeal. It tells buyers that the whole property has been looked after. For the cost of a day's work and a load of bark mulch, the return on investment for a property sale is substantial.
